This image was born moments after I pulled this carrot out of the hydroponics garden that my students, my son and myself maintain. I first snapped it using my iphone to see if the idea worked and then couldn't wait to get my "real" camera out to get a shot that met my precise expectation. A thrill was already in the air when this carrot was harvested because we grew this carrot from a seed planted only a few weeks before. My gifted students have learned so much about nature and the value of growing their own food through the set-up and care of this hydroponics garden. However, this carrot, without any preplanning, seconds after pulling it out of the ground, became the source of a different, almost indescribable thrill for me. I am so pleased to be able to share it. It isn't often that an image so accurately depicts my initial vision. For me it represents power, opportunity, knowledge, and longevity along with deep fragility and dependency. It is nature working at it's finest in graceful balance with other factors. It is proof of the amazing ability we humans have to grow our own food, giving us the power to nourish our bodies and minds. It also reminds me that we must take care of our planet because we only have this power under the right conditions. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
